Head spa for hair loss in Arcadia: what it can and can't do

A head spa cleans and massages the scalp; it does not treat thinning hair. Here is what Package C includes, and when a dermatologist should come first.

The short answer

A head spa for hair loss cannot treat or reverse thinning. It cleanses and massages the scalp. At O2 in Arcadia, Package C runs 75 minutes, $176 regular or $88 at the member rate, and adds a hair growth / strengthening nourishment step to the 60 minute Package D. For shedding or thinning, see a board-certified dermatologist first.

Does a head spa for hair loss work?

Not as a treatment for the hair loss itself. A head spa for hair loss can clean the scalp, work tension out of the head, neck and shoulders, and give you a quiet hour, but it does not reach the usual reasons hair thins: heredity, hormones, illness, medication, or a stressful event a few months back. At O2 Head & Beauty Spa in Arcadia, the session built around hair is Package C, because it adds two hair-focused steps to the base routine.

Those steps are what the menu calls "hair growth / strengthening nourishment" and a phototherapy meridian comb treatment. The booking page names them without describing the product or the light used, so this page treats them as part of a scalp-care session and makes no promise that hair will grow back or stop falling out. What you can count on is a thorough cleanse, warm water, a long massage and a scalp analysis before and after, which shows you your own scalp up close.

Is it shedding or hair loss?

Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). The AAD draws a line between two problems that look the same in a hairbrush. Excessive shedding means the body lets go of many more hairs than usual, typically a few months after a trigger such as giving birth, a high fever, surgery, losing 20 or more pounds, stopping birth control pills or a hard stretch of stress, and it tends to stop once the trigger has passed. Hair loss means something is keeping hair from growing, and the cause has to be found before anything else.

Signs that lean toward shedding

Hair tends to come out across the whole head rather than from one spot, you find more of it in the shower and on the pillow, and you can point to something hard that happened a few months earlier. Your part and hairline look the way they always have, even if your ponytail feels lighter for a while.

Signs that lean toward hair loss

The AAD's list of hair loss signs includes a part that keeps widening, a thinner ponytail, a hairline that recedes a little further each year and a bald spot that grows slowly. Faster changes matter more. A bald patch or strip that appears within 1 or 2 days, or hair coming out in clumps when you comb or brush it, is a reason to see a dermatologist promptly rather than book a spa.

When should you see a dermatologist first?

As soon as you notice thinning, and before you spend money on scalp treatments. The AAD's page on hair loss diagnosis and treatment says the earlier treatment starts, the more likely it is to work. The appointment itself is mostly looking and asking: a few questions about when the loss began, an examination of the scalp, and sometimes a gentle pull test or blood work.

Medical treatments take months too. The AAD notes that finasteride usually takes about 4 months to show any improvement and minoxidil about 6 to 12 months, which makes a useful yardstick whenever a spa, a product or a video suggests visible change after one or two visits.

Book the dermatologist before the head spa in any of these cases:

  • Hair is coming out in clumps, or a bald patch appeared within a day or two
  • Your part is widening, your hairline is moving back, or your ponytail is noticeably thinner than a year ago
  • The scalp itches, burns, scales or hurts, or has sores or a rash
  • The shedding began after a new medicine, an illness or childbirth and has not eased
  • You already use a hair loss treatment and want to know how to time it around a deep cleanse

What does the research on scalp massage show?

One small study sits behind most of the claims you will see. In a 2016 study by Koyama and colleagues, 9 healthy Japanese men with no obvious hair loss used a handheld massage device on one side of the scalp for 4 minutes a day for 24 weeks. Average hair thickness on the massaged side rose from 0.085 mm to 0.092 mm, but the number of hairs did not go up.

A head spa for hair loss booked every few weeks is a much smaller dose than a device used every day for six months, and no study has looked at occasional spa sessions. Our guide to scalp massage and hair growth reads this trial and a 2019 survey in full, including the parts most head spa pages leave out.

What happens during Package C?

Package C runs 75 minutes. It includes every step of the 60 minute Package D and adds three more: the hair growth / strengthening nourishment step, a phototherapy meridian comb treatment, and an extra round of hand, arms, neck, shoulder and head massage.

The base steps do the cleaning. Deep scalp cleansing, nano steam and the waterfall rinse lift oil and product from the roots, and the scalp analysis at the start and end lets you compare the two. Massage fills much of the remaining time.

If you are keeping an eye on a part line or the crown, the analysis gives you a close look at the skin and roots on the day, and some people like having that as a reference point. It cannot tell you why hair is thinning, so treat anything you notice there as a question to take to your dermatologist. Here is the full list of steps, in the booking page's own wording:

  • Pre and post scalp analysis comparison
  • Aromatherapy oil massage
  • Head / neck / shoulder / arms massage
  • Deep scalp cleansing
  • Waterfall hydrotherapy and meridian therapy
  • Nano steam therapy
  • Scalp serum spray
  • High frequency ozone comb therapy
  • Added in Package C: hair growth / strengthening nourishment
  • Added in Package C: hand / arms / neck / shoulder / head massage
  • Added in Package C: phototherapy meridian comb treatment

Using a head spa for hair loss alongside a dermatologist

A head spa for hair loss fits best as scalp care next to medical treatment, never in place of it. Once a dermatologist has found the cause and you have a plan, a clean scalp and a long massage can sit comfortably beside it, as long as each side knows what the other is doing.

What to tell the therapist

Say what you have been diagnosed with, if anything, and what goes on your scalp: a prescription solution or foam, an oil, or nothing at all. Point out the areas that are thin or tender so the pressure can come down there, and mention recent color, bleaching, perming or relaxing. Hair that has already shed often stays caught in the rest until the next wash, so a few loose strands in the basin are normal with any shampoo and do not mean the massage pulled them out.

What to ask your dermatologist

Ask whether anything in a head spa should wait while you are on treatment, such as steam, a deep cleanse or a light comb, and how to time a topical medicine around the visit. Take the Package C step list above with you, so the answer is about the actual session rather than head spas in general.

How much is Package C, and how often do people book it?

Package C is $176 at the regular rate or $88 at the member rate for 75 minutes. The booking page shows both prices for every session, and on the scalp packages the member rate is half the regular one; ask the front desk how membership works, because the booking page does not explain it.

Package D costs $20 less at the regular rate and $10 less at the member rate. You give up the nourishment step, the light comb, the extra massage and 15 minutes. If what you want is a clean scalp and an hour to switch off, Package D covers it; if you want every hair-focused step on the menu, choose Package C.

Both 90 minute packages keep everything in Package C, including the nourishment step, and add more massage. Package B ($196 regular, $98 member) adds a longer upper-body massage and one add-on, a mini facial, hand treatment or neck treatment. Package A ($276 regular, $138 member) adds a back, arms and legs massage with hot stone therapy. Neither does more for hair than Package C; they suit someone who also wants the extra bodywork.

How often to come back is a budget question more than a hair question, because no schedule has been shown to change hair. A sensible approach is to book one Package C, notice how long your scalp stays clean and comfortable, and decide from there. Your dermatologist's plan and your daily routine will do more for your hair between visits than any head spa.

Questions people ask

Will Package C stop my hair from falling out?

There is no evidence that it will. Package C cleanses and massages the scalp and includes a step the menu calls hair growth / strengthening nourishment, which is the name of the step rather than a promised result. For hair that is thinning or shedding heavily, a board-certified dermatologist is the right first stop.

Is a head spa safe if my hair is thinning?

For most people a scalp cleanse and massage is gentle, but tell the therapist where your hair is thin or your scalp is tender so the pressure can come down there. Wait and ask your dermatologist first if your scalp has sores, a rash, a recent procedure or an active scalp condition.

Why do I see hair in the basin during the rinse?

Hairs that have already shed often stay tangled in the rest of your hair until the next wash, so some come out with any shampoo, at home or at a spa. Losing 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, according to the AAD. If hair comes out in clumps, see a dermatologist.

Should I tell O2 about my hair loss treatment?

Yes. Tell the therapist what you use on your scalp and when you last applied it, and ask your dermatologist how to time a topical treatment around a deep cleanse and steam. Mention recent color or chemical treatments too.

How much is the hair nourishment head spa at O2?

Package C, the session with the hair growth / strengthening nourishment step, is 75 minutes at $176 regular or $88 at the member rate. Ask the front desk how membership works.

Is Package C or Package D better if my hair is thinning?

Neither one treats thinning. Package D is the 60 minute base session: scalp analysis, deep cleansing, waterfall rinse, steam and massage. Package C adds the nourishment step, the phototherapy meridian comb and more massage for $20 more at the regular rate, so choose it if you want those steps and the extra 15 minutes.

Can a head spa help with stress-related shedding?

It cannot speed up regrowth. The AAD says shedding after a stressful event tends to stop on its own once the trigger has passed, and a dermatologist can confirm that is what you have. A long scalp massage may help you feel calmer in the meantime, which is a fair reason to book on its own.
