The short answer

For pain relief massage in Arcadia, O2 Head & Beauty Spa at 1432 S Baldwin Ave has four sessions. If one area hurts, such as a stiff neck or one shoulder, book Targeted Treatment: 60 minutes, $120 regular or $80 at the member rate. For tension in several places, Full-Body Treatment is $188 regular or $90 member.

Which pain relief massage in Arcadia should you book?

Book Targeted Treatment if the pain sits in one place, Full-Body Treatment if the tension is spread across your neck, shoulders and back, and ask about the Quan Tong Therapy Device if you want to try device-assisted therapy. Those are the four sessions of pain relief massage in Arcadia at O2 Head & Beauty Spa, and the first two both run 60 minutes.

The booking page gives no step list for any of the four, so the names are the best guide to what each is for. Before the session starts, give a place, a pressure and a limit: "right side of my neck into the shoulder, medium pressure, nothing on the lower back" leaves far less to guess than "everything is tight". Speak up at once if anything hurts in a sharp or spreading way.

One problem area: Targeted Treatment

Targeted Treatment spends its 60 minutes on one problem area. It suits the complaint you can point to with one finger: the side of the neck after a week of laptop work, the shoulder you sleep on, or a band across the lower back after a weekend in the yard. It is also the lower-priced of the two 60 minute sessions.

Tension in several places: Full-Body Treatment

Full-Body Treatment works the whole body in the same 60 minutes. Choose it when you cannot name one spot, or when the neck, upper back and hips all feel tight at once, for example after a long drive or a house move. The trade-off is time: an hour spread over the whole body leaves less of it for any single area.

Device-assisted: the Quan Tong Therapy Device

The Quan Tong Therapy Device session is device-assisted pain relief therapy, booked at 45 or 90 minutes. The booking page does not describe the device, so this page does not either. Ask the front desk what the device does and whether it suits you before you book, especially if you are pregnant or being treated for a medical condition.

Neck, shoulders or lower back: which session fits where it hurts?

One clear spot points to Targeted Treatment, and pain in three or four places points to Full-Body Treatment. If you are torn between them, start with Targeted Treatment on the worst spot; one visit will tell you whether the rest of your body wants the longer reach.

These common patterns each point to one session:

  • A stiff neck that will not turn fully to one side, often worse after a day of screen work: Targeted Treatment.
  • One tight shoulder, or a knot under the shoulder blade on your mouse side: Targeted Treatment.
  • Neck and both shoulders together, with a tension headache by evening: Targeted Treatment on the upper body, or a head spa package with neck and shoulder massage (see below). Our tension headache self-care guide covers the daily habits that may help between visits.
  • A lower back that aches after sitting or lifting: Targeted Treatment if that is the only complaint, Full-Body Treatment if your hips and legs feel it too.
  • Stiffness from head to calves after a hard week, travel or a move: Full-Body Treatment.

Is a 60 minute session long enough for neck pain?

Probably, if you book more than one. In a 2014 trial of 228 adults with chronic neck pain, summarized by NCCIH, people were assigned to 4 weeks of 30 minute or 60 minute massages at different frequencies, or to a wait list. The 60 minute sessions given 2 or 3 times a week did better than fewer or shorter ones, and the 30 minute sessions did no better than waiting.

Targeted and Full-Body Treatment both run 60 minutes, the session length that helped in that trial. The frequency is the part a single visit cannot copy: 4 weeks at that rate means 8 to 12 visits, which is where the member rate makes the biggest difference. Ask the front desk how membership works before you plan a run of sessions.

The trial is covered in more detail, next to the low-back studies, in our guide to whether massage helps back pain. If the pain has lasted for months, massage and other approaches for chronic pain explains where massage fits beside exercise, acupuncture and medical care.

How long the relief lasts

Mostly days to weeks, going by what the studies measured. NCCIH's overview of massage therapy describes a 2016 review of 4 U.S. studies with 519 participants that found massage could give short-term relief of neck pain when sessions were long enough and frequent enough. Treat it as a way to ease the tension while you deal with what causes it: the desk height, the pillow, the hours spent looking down at a phone.

When should you see a doctor before a pain relief massage?

See a doctor first if the pain started with a fall or an injury, if it spreads with numbness, tingling or weakness, or if it comes with signs that something other than tight muscle is going on. The two lists below come from NIH sources. NCCIH adds the general rule: do not use massage to put off seeing a health care provider about a medical problem, and mention pregnancy, recent surgery or any condition your doctor is treating when you book.

Back pain

The NIAMS back pain page says to see a doctor if the pain does not improve after a few weeks, if it follows a fall or injury, or if it comes with numbness and tingling, weakness or numbness in your legs, fever, trouble urinating or weight loss you did not intend. Severe back pain that does not improve with medication belongs on the same list.

Neck pain

MedlinePlus, the NIH's consumer health library, advises contacting a provider when neck symptoms do not go away in 1 week with self-care, when numbness, tingling or weakness reaches an arm or hand, or when the pain followed an injury and you cannot move your neck normally. Pain that gets worse at night or keeps you from resting is also on its list.

Older adults and firm pressure

NCCIH notes that the rare serious problems reported after massage, such as a blood clot, a nerve injury or a broken bone, have often involved vigorous techniques or people already at higher risk of injury, older adults among them. If you are older, have osteoporosis or take a blood thinner, ask for lighter pressure and say why when you book.

How much do the pain relief sessions cost?

Targeted Treatment costs the least, and Full-Body Treatment shows the widest gap between the two rates, with the member rate at less than half the regular one. The booking page lists a Regular and a Member rate for every session, set out in the table below. It does not say how membership works, so ask the front desk.

The rate you pay changes the choice. At the regular rate, Full-Body Treatment costs $68 more than Targeted Treatment for the same hour, which is a real reason to pick the narrower session if one spot is the problem. At the member rate the gap shrinks to $10, so the decision comes down to where it hurts rather than the price.

The booking page also shows four single-price listings with "Manual Massage" in their names and no member rate: the 60-Minute Targeted Manual Massage at $160, the 60-Minute Full-Body Manual Massage at $180, and the 45-Minute and 90-Minute Quan Tong Pain-Relief Therapy & Manual Massage at $198 and $278. It does not explain how these differ from the sessions in the table, so ask before you book one of them.

Can a head spa package ease neck and back tension too?

Yes. The two 90 minute head spas, Package B and Package A, both add massage beyond the scalp, and Package A is the one that reaches the back. Each keeps everything in the 75 minute Package C, which already includes the scalp analysis, deep cleansing and waterfall hydrotherapy.

Package B is $196 regular or $98 at the member rate, and Package A is $276 regular or $138 member. Choose one of them when the tension sits in your neck, shoulders or back and you want the scalp treatment as well. Choose a pain relief session when the pain is the main reason for the visit.

What each package adds, as the booking page lists it:

  • Package B: everything in Package C, plus a hand / arms / neck / shoulder / head massage and one add-on of your choice: mini facial, hand treatment or neck treatment.
  • Package A: everything in Package C, plus a back / arms / legs / neck / shoulder / head massage and hot stone therapy.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between Targeted Treatment and Full-Body Treatment?

Both run 60 minutes. Targeted Treatment focuses on one problem area, such as the neck or lower back, while Full-Body Treatment works the whole body. Targeted Treatment is $120 regular or $80 at the member rate; Full-Body Treatment is $188 regular or $90 member.

What does the Quan Tong Therapy Device do?

The booking page lists it as device-assisted pain relief therapy, in 45 minute or 90 minute sessions, and gives no further description. Ask the front desk what the device does and whether it suits your kind of pain before you book, particularly if you are pregnant or being treated for a medical condition.

How often should I book a massage for a stiff neck?

In a 2014 trial of 228 adults with chronic neck pain, 60 minute sessions 2 or 3 times a week for 4 weeks helped more than shorter or less frequent ones. If you plan a run of visits, ask the front desk how the member rate works. If the stiffness has not eased after a week of self-care, see a provider first.

Which back or neck symptoms mean I should see a doctor instead?

Pain after a fall or injury; numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or leg; fever; weight loss you did not intend; trouble urinating; or back pain that has not improved after a few weeks. A stiff neck with fever and headache needs emergency care. Massage should never be the reason you put off seeing a doctor.

Is there a member rate for pain relief massage in Arcadia?

Yes. Every session on O2's booking page has a Regular and a Member rate: Targeted Treatment is $80 for members against $120 regular, and the 45 minute Quan Tong session is $99 against $129. Ask the front desk how membership works.

Can I get neck and back massage with a head spa?

Yes. Package B adds a hand, arm, neck, shoulder and head massage plus one add-on, such as a neck treatment. Package A adds a back, arm, leg, neck, shoulder and head massage with hot stone therapy. Both run 90 minutes and include the full 75 minute Package C scalp treatment.

What are the Manual Massage listings on the booking page?

The booking page shows single-price items with Manual Massage in the name, such as the 60-Minute Targeted Manual Massage at $160 and the 60-Minute Full-Body Manual Massage at $180, with no member rate and no description. Ask the front desk how they differ from Targeted and Full-Body Treatment before you book one.
