Choosing a head spa in the San Gabriel Valley: three styles and where O2 fits
Most of the Los Angeles area's head spas sit in a handful of valley cities, and they do not all run the same treatment. Here is how the three styles differ, what they charge and how far Arcadia is from you.
The short answer
A head spa in the San Gabriel Valley is usually one of three styles: Chinese herbal washing, Korean scalp analysis or a Japanese-style waterfall rinse. O2 Head & Beauty Spa in Arcadia combines scalp analysis, waterfall hydrotherapy and meridian therapy. Start with Package D: 60 minutes, $156 regular or $78 at the member rate.
- head spas in the L.A. area in 2024, clustered in San Gabriel, Temple City, Arcadia and Rosemead
- about two dozen
- Package D at the member rate for 60 minutes ($156 regular)
- $78
- drive from Temple City; Pasadena and Alhambra are about 15–20
- about 5 minutes
What kinds of head spa in the San Gabriel Valley can you book?
Three, broadly: spas built around herbal washing, spas built around a scalp reading with Korean analysis equipment, and Japanese-style spas built around a slow waterfall rinse. Any head spa in the San Gabriel Valley mixes some of each, but most lead with one, and knowing which tells you how the hour will feel.
Most of the region's head spas are in the valley. In February 2024 the Los Angeles Times counted about two dozen head spas in the L.A. area and found them concentrated in San Gabriel, Temple City, Arcadia and Rosemead. One of the spas it visited, CXG Scalp Spa in San Gabriel, opened in mid-2021.
Herbal-wash spas
These come out of the Chinese head spa chains. Tou Dao Tang opened its U.S. flagship in Temple City in fall 2022, and the LA Times reported more than 9,000 locations in China. The paper described its 90 minute Classic Scalp treatment as a five-step session of repeated scalp kneading, combing and cleansing with five herbal "soups". Expect several rounds of washing.
Korean scalp-analysis spas
These lead with measurement. Bero Scalp Spa in San Gabriel says on its Fresha page that it uses an HMS Pro scalp analyzer from Korea to assess hair type, density and scalp health, and its menu includes scalp repairing and regrowth sessions. The pitch is a reading of your scalp first, then products and steps chosen to match it.
Japanese-style waterfall spas
These sell calm. The signature step is a warm-water arch that rinses your hair while you lie back with a towel over your eyes, usually with steam and a long scalp massage around it. TT Head Spa in Arcadia calls its service "Japanese-inspired" on its own site and pairs it with scalp analysis tools and red light therapy. Our Japanese head spa page covers the format in more detail.
The styles overlap in practice. The LA Times described CXG's session as including 10 minutes under a waterfall-like device pouring herb-treated water over the head and neck, which puts a herbal wash and a waterfall in the same chair.
Where does O2's head spa sit among the three styles?
In the middle of all three. Every O2 package opens and closes with a scalp analysis comparison, runs a waterfall hydrotherapy rinse with meridian therapy, and adds nano steam and an ozone comb. That is the format people usually call a Japanese-style head spa, with a scalp reading at both ends and meridian work drawn from traditional Chinese medicine.
The booking page names the steps rather than a tradition, so the table maps each style to the O2 step closest to it. If the meridian side interests you, our guide to tui na, acupressure and other TCM bodywork covers what the research says about point-based work.
| Style | What it leads with | An example in the valley | Closest O2 step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Herbal wash | Repeated washing and scalp kneading with herbal infusions | Tou Dao Tang, Temple City | Deep scalp cleansing; meridian therapy |
| Korean scalp analysis | A device reading of the scalp, then matched products | Bero Scalp Spa, San Gabriel | Pre and post scalp analysis comparison |
| Japanese-style waterfall | A warm-water rinse under an arch, steam and a quiet room | TT Head Spa, Arcadia | Waterfall hydrotherapy; nano steam therapy |
How do head spa prices compare across the valley?
Hour-long sessions at the spas named here are listed from under $120, and 90 minute sessions run from $108 to $198. The low end is Tou Dao Tang's Classic Scalp as the LA Times reported it in 2024; the high end is the Premium Scalp Bubble Detox on TT Head Spa's Fresha page in 2026. Prices from 2024 may have changed, so check each spa's booking page.
O2's regular rates sit at or above the top of that range: $156 for the 60 minute Package D and $196 for the 90 minute Package B. The member rates are exactly half, and those two undercut every listed price of the same length above: Package D at $78 and Package B at $98. The booking page shows both rates for every session; ask the front desk how membership works.
Most of the spread comes from two things: the length and what is bundled in. A 90 minute session that adds a facial or a body massage usually costs more than one that spends the same time on washing and scalp massage. When you compare two prices, check that both cover the same minutes and the same list of steps.
Which head spa claims hold up?
Relaxation holds up best, and the hair and scalp claims hold up least. The LA Times summed up what head spas claim: that scalp treatments promote circulation and help prevent dandruff, itchiness, dryness, inflammation and hair loss. Whichever style you choose, weigh those promises against two pieces of evidence.
On hair, the most cited study is small. In a 2016 study in Eplasty, 9 men who had 4 minutes of standardized scalp massage a day for 24 weeks ended up with thicker hair shafts, from 0.085 mm on average to 0.092 mm. A daily routine in a handful of men does not show that a monthly head spa regrows hair; our head spa for hair loss page goes through what a session can and cannot do.
On dandruff, the American Academy of Dermatology points to medicated shampoos with ingredients such as zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, selenium sulfide or ketoconazole, used 2 to 3 times a week for straight or wavy hair. A head spa's deep cleansing may leave the scalp feeling clearer for a while, but it does not replace that routine.
Which O2 package should you book first?
Package D, the 60 minute Classic Scalp Treatment. It is the shortest package and already carries a piece of each style: the scalp reading, the waterfall rinse and the meridian work. If you are driving in from the far side of the valley, it also keeps the whole trip to about two hours.
The booking page lists these steps for Package D:
Packages C and B, in between
Package C runs 75 minutes and adds hair growth / strengthening nourishment, a longer hand, arm, neck, shoulder and head massage, and a phototherapy meridian comb treatment. Package B keeps all of that, stretches to 90 minutes and lets you choose one add-on: a mini facial, a hand treatment or a neck treatment. Package B is the closest O2 comes to the head spa and facial pairings some valley spas sell.
Package A, if your back needs work too
Package A is the full-body option: 90 minutes that keep everything in the 75 minute Package C and add a back, arm, leg, neck, shoulder and head massage with hot stone therapy. It is $276 regular or $138 at the member rate. Choose it when your back and legs need attention as much as your scalp does.
- Pre and post scalp analysis comparison
- Aromatherapy oil massage
- Head / neck / shoulder / arms massage
- Deep scalp cleansing
- Waterfall hydrotherapy and meridian therapy
- Nano steam therapy
- Scalp serum spray
- High frequency ozone comb therapy
How long is the drive to Arcadia from your valley city?
About 5 minutes from Temple City and 15 to 20 minutes from Pasadena or Alhambra, outside rush hour. The times below are free-flow estimates from an open routing service, rounded up, so allow extra at peak hours.
Finding the door on Baldwin Avenue
The spa is at 1432 S Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007, beside W Naomi Ave on the stretch of Baldwin between W Duarte Rd and W Camino Real Ave. Westfield Santa Anita is about 0.9 miles north on the same street, and Santa Anita Park is about a mile away. Look for the navy awning above the number 1432.
Coming by Metro
The Metro A Line stops at Arcadia Station on N First Ave, about 2.4 miles from the spa by road. That suits riders from Pasadena and the cities along the line, but the last stretch needs a car or a rideshare, roughly 5 to 10 minutes, so build that into your start time.
Hours and booking
O2 is open every day from 10 AM to 8 PM; the booking page shows the last start time for each package. Book online or call (626) 857-6608.

How do you choose between head spas in the valley?
Decide what you want from the hour first, then check five things on the booking page before you choose a head spa in the San Gabriel Valley.
- The style. For the most washing, look for a herbal-wash spa; for a measured reading of your scalp, a Korean-style analysis spa; for a quiet water ritual, a Japanese-style one. A mixed menu like O2's covers some of each.
- The length behind the price. Line up 60 minute sessions against 60 minute sessions, and read the step list, since one spa's 90 minutes may include a facial or a body massage and another's may not.
- Whether the scalp analysis happens at both ends. A reading before and after lets you see what changed in the same visit; at O2 it is the first line of every package.
- Hours that fit your week. Closing times among the spas named on this page run from 7 PM to 10 PM, per their Fresha and Yelp listings in 2026; O2 closes at 8 PM every day.
- The membership terms. O2 lists a member rate on every session, so ask the front desk what membership costs and what it commits you to before you count on the lower rate.
Questions people ask
Which San Gabriel Valley cities have the most head spas?
San Gabriel, Temple City, Arcadia and Rosemead, according to a February 2024 Los Angeles Times report that counted about two dozen head spas across the L.A. area. Two of the spas it covered, CXG and Tou Dao Tang, are in San Gabriel and Temple City.
What is the difference between a Chinese and a Japanese-style head spa?
Chinese-style head spas tend to centre on repeated washing with herbal infusions and long scalp kneading. Japanese-style head spas centre on a warm waterfall rinse, steam and a quiet room. Many spas in the valley mix the two, so read the step list rather than the label.
Does O2 do a scalp analysis like the Korean-style spas?
Every O2 package includes a pre and post scalp analysis comparison, so your scalp is checked before the treatment and again at the end. The booking page does not name the analysis equipment, so ask the front desk if that matters to you.
How much is a head spa in the San Gabriel Valley?
At the spas named on this page, hour-long sessions are listed from under $120 and 90 minute sessions from $108 to $198. At O2 in Arcadia, the 60 minute Package D is $156 regular or $78 at the member rate. Ask the front desk how membership works.
How far is O2 from Pasadena and Alhambra?
About 15 to 20 minutes by car from either city hall in light traffic: 7.4 miles from Pasadena and 5.6 miles from Alhambra. From Pasadena, one simple route is the I-210 east to the Baldwin Ave exit, then about 2 miles south on Baldwin.
Can I get a head spa in the evening?
Yes. O2 is open until 8 PM every day of the week, from 10 AM, so a 60 minute Package D starting at about 7 PM finishes at closing time. Book online or call (626) 857-6608 to see which evening slots are open.
